Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships (CAPA)

Equivalent to full in-state tuition and mandatory fees, the Department awards CAPAs to outstanding undergraduate Theatre majors for academic excellence and exceptional performance or design/production skills. For qualifying students, these scholarships may be renewed up to eight semesters. Scholarships are awarded to fall incoming Theatre majors at the Scholarship Audition Day held in the previous spring semester. All students who have been accepted to The University of Maryland as a declared Theatre may participate. Students who have not received a letter of admission from Undergraduate Admissions by the application date may apply; they will be invited to participate based on the strength of their application packet. Spring Scholarship audition day will be announced later this fall semester. CAPA awards may also be made available to students currently in the program.

Smith Family Excellence in Theatre Awards (SETA)

Funded by the Robert and Clarice Smith family, these awards emulate the CAPA scholarships. They are given for one year with the Department’s option to renew for a second year. SETA awards are auditioned in the fall to current full-time Theatre majors. In addition, two SETA awards are presented at Commencement in the spring. When merited, a SETA Out-of-State Award may be given to enhance the funds of a CAPA gift.
