ACADEMIC SUCCESS
- Go to class always.
- Be prepared for each class always.
- Turn in assignments on time always.
- Sit in the front of the classroom.
- Speak out in class, ask questions and share your thoughts.
- Make a point to introduce yourself to your professors and TAs.
- Utilize your professors' office hours and not just when papers are
due or during exam times.
General Tips:
- The new Theatre curriculum requires students to complete the Foundation
Series in their first three semesters. THET 288 (Fundamentals Project)
may be taken in the third or fourth semester. After that, courses in the
Area Menu may be selected. University CORE classes will round out the
course work for the first two years.
- A primary benefit of a liberal arts degree - such as ours - is a well-rounded
education. Students should be very aware from the outset of balancing
academics and departmental production activities. It gets increasingly
harder to bring up a low cumulative GPA, so good grades in the first several
semesters should be the goal.
- Your academic success is represented by your GPA. Effective Fall 2002,
students are required to achieve a 2.0 GPA to maintain satisfactory academic
progress. Students with a GPA under 2.0 will be placed on Academic Probation.
More information can be found at: www.testudo.umd.edu/soc/satsprog.html.
- Your GPA is important for scholarships and awards and admission to
graduate school. It is often the first bit of data considered in these
cases, and may be the stopper for many potential opportunities.
- You must pass courses required for your THET major with a C or better.
- Course Repeat Policy: There is a limit to the number of times a student
may repeat a course. Students may have one repeat of any course. They
cannot be registered for any given course more than twice. Students may
repeat no more than 18 credits.
- Developing strong writing skills is essential. The very first time
an instructor indicates you need to work on your writing, get yourself
to the Writing Center.
- Withdrawing from a course is not a good option. You may need to gain permission from the instructor, chair of the Department, Dean and the Registrar's Office. Grades of "W" stay on your transcript.
