THET 479 Requirements

Theatre majors who entered the University of Maryland from Fall 2000 to Fall 2004 and chose the old curriculum, are required to complete 1 credit of THET 279 - Theatre Workshop I and 3 credits of THET 479 - Theatre Workshop II. As we are no longer offering THET 279, these students may take an additional THET 479 in its place. Students who entered under the new curriculum in Fall 2004, are required to complete 3 credits of THET 479.

Before registering for THET 479, students must sign a contract for a specific assignment with the appropriate faculty supervisor. In addition, in some cases you must have taken the prerequisite courseTHET 114.

Attendance at all production or work calls is assumed. In addition to attendance, grading is based on punctuality, readiness to work, active participation in assigned tasks, willingness to learn and take instruction, initiative and attitude in projects and the quality of job completion. One unexcused absence will result in the lowering of a student's grade by one letter grade, and two unexcused absences will result in failure.

Remember: When you sign a contract you are making a committment to execute a specific task. You are responsible for seeing the job to completion and many people are counting on you. Do not sign up for THET 479 unless you are absolutely sure you will be able to fulfill your obligation. We are counting on you!

All theatre majors (in each version of the curriculum) are required to complete three 1-credit assignments of THET 479 - Theatre Workshop II. The assignments must be completed in three different areas (noted in bold) from the list below. In the case where one assignment is run crew and one is shop - a student may complete two assignments within a bolded section. You must gain permission from your advisor to do this.

Scenery: set construction crew, fly master (complex production)
Paint: scenic artist, scene painter
Props: prop construction or acquisition
Lights: electrician
Costumes: wig designer, makeup designer, wardrobe crew head (complex production), stitcher
Sound: live-mix sound board operator (complex production)
Management: stage manager, assistant stage manager, assistant technical director, master electrician, assistant master electrician

How to Sign Up for THET 479

The Office of David Kriebs (PAC 3745) serves as the clearing house for all THET 479 positions. Check the bulletin board outside this office for up-to-date lists of all open positions. Speak with the listed supervisor if you have questions about a position. That same supervisor will give you the section number under which you should enroll and will initial your Undergraduate Schedule Request Form or your Schedule Adjustment Form. Once you have secured the appropriate section number and the instructor's initials, take your form to the Reception Desk in the Department of Theatre for electronic stamping. You must then register for the course before the final add/drop date of the semester you are completing the work.

How to Sign Up for THET 479 - After the Schedule Adjustment Period Ends

THET 479 can only be added after the Schedule Adjustment Period has ended IF the contract was signed after that date. To add a course after this final add/drop date, you need to speak with the Receptionist in the Department of Theatre for instructions. They will give you an instruction card and the Departmental forms to fill out and have signed by the position supervisor, the Department Chair, and your college. Once you have gained all these approvals, you must take the forms to the Registrar's Office in the Mitchell Building to register in person.

Fire Sales—Limited Time Offer—One Week Only—Sometimes—Not Every Semester

You may also complete a 1-credit THET 479 assignment by working during a "Fire Sale" week. The scene shop and the costume shop sometimes (but not always) offer these opportunities during the last full week before the beginning of fall and spring classes. The electrics shop and the paint shop occasionally offer fire Sale opportunities. In the scene shop, you work a 40-hour week plus the strike of that production. In the costume shop, electrics shop or paint shop, you work a 45-hour week.

If you would like to fulfill one of your THET 479 assignments by working during a Fire Sale, you should signup well in advance. When Fire Sale opportunities are offered, there are limited positions available. You should not assume that a Fire Sale opportunity will be available when you need to fulfill THET 479 assignment.
