Acting in a Directing Scene:
Students who want to earn extra credit can audition to act in directing scenes from THET 330 (Directing), taught by Scot Reese. Those interested in this extra credit option should attend auditions held by the directors at a time to be announced in class and posted on the course web page. Students should also put their names on a list located by the door of Room 2817 (Scot Reese’s office). Directors will contact the actors directly. Students who are cast in the scenes must have their director and Professor Reese fill out the contract below. They must submit the completed contract to their discussion leader in order to receive points for their work.
On March 5th, 7th, and 12th from 10:00am-11:50am, directing students will present their first scenes, focusing on place, event, and action. Preparation for each scene includes at least three rehearsals of two hours each. Rehearsals for these scenes begin approximately two weeks prior to their presentation.
On Wednesday, May 9th, from 7-10pm, the same directing students will present their final scenes, focusing on place, event, action, and beats. Preparation for each scene includes at least four rehearsals of two hours each. Line memorization is required. Rehearsals for the final scenes begin approximately three weeks prior to their presentation.
Students can earn up to 25 points for either of these options, depending on the quality of their work, promptness to rehearsals, scene-related activities (as determined by director and course instructor), and their ability to work in an ensemble.
Directing Scenes Extra Credit Contract
Please note: Only those students who are cast in scenes will receive extra credit – students do not get extra credit points for auditioning. Another student’s grade is hinging on your work in these scenes. If a student commits to attend a rehearsal or performance and does not, not only will that student not receive extra credit points, but 25 points will be deducted from his or her final grade in THET 110. If a student chooses to miss a class to participate in these scenes, including THET 110, that absence will not be excused. Students may not miss an exam to participate in the scenes.
It is also possible to earn extra credit by performing in an Off-Center show. In order to earn these extra points you will need to complete your role and provide a statement from the director of the play documenting your work. Look for announcements for upcoming auditions on the course webpage. You may also run crew for an Off-Center show for extra credit. For more details on how points for Off-Center shows will be allocated, please see your discussion leader.
